Marriage Counseling

At Psychological Associates of Michigan we believe that couples often truly love each other, but do not know how, or do not have the tools, to effectively communicate and transcend conflict. We view marital/couple conflict as arising from misunderstandings or misinterpretations of their partner’s behavior or intentions. Once both partners misinterpret each other, they both begin to feel hurt, and this often transforms into anger, resentment, defensiveness, and withdrawal. Ultimately, such coping responses tend to lead both individuals to feel unloved. We believe that couples who are experiencing discord can learn how to communicate effectively and treat each other in a loving manner.

In couples therapy we actively help you and your mate to become aware of the thinking and attitudes that lead to conflict and alienation. Additionally, we will help you to identify patterns in relating to each other that do not allow you both to get the love you desire.

At Psychological Associates of Michigan, in couple focused therapy, you will learn:
 • How to decrease defensiveness, contempt, criticism, and withdrawal.
 • How to develop trust.
 • Techniques to help you improve your relationship and make the most of your relationship.
 • How to transcend issues related to infidelity.

Research by John Gottman has shown that having frequent arguments does not make a bad marriage; however, how a couple comes together to repair or make-up makes the difference. Instead, divorce is likely when a couple refuses to talk and one or both individuals withdraw. Our goal is to help couples to prevent divorce.
