What is EMDR Therapy?

David Clark is certified as an EMDR therapist. EMDR is an acronym for Eye Movement Desensitizing and Reprocessing. EMDR is a powerful therapy tool when applied by a seasoned, skilled clinician. It is extremely useful for treating individuals who have experienced painful traumas, such as rape, assault, combat, and the loss of a loved one. It can also be used when a person is feeling “stuck” with regard to certain emotions and thoughts.

EMDR aids individuals who are survivors and have been unable to forget past traumatic life events. It promotes rapid cognitive and emotional processing of deeply rooted memories, allowing individuals to regain control over their thoughts and emotions. Thru EMDR people are able to change the perceptions that they have developed of themselves as a result of a traumatic event; thus, they no longer view themselves as helpless.

EMDR is typically used in conjunction with CBT.
